Cave Mont Blanc

In the northwest corner of Italy, in the mountainous region of Valle d’Aosta, directly underneath the famed Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), sits the aptly named Cave Mont Blanc, the foremost producer of Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle.

Cave Mont Blanc is located in Morgex, Val D’Aosta. Created in 1983 by the “Association des Viticulteurs” with the aim of developing the Valdostan viticulture and making its products known to a wider audience. The cultivation area extends between Morgex and La Salle, the vineyards reach 1200 meters above sea level and are the highest in Europe. The particular climatic conditions make parasitic diseases almost harmless, for this reason the treatments are reduced compared to other wine-growing areas. Even the phylloxera which at the end of the 19th century destroyed most of the vineyards of Europe could not resist the altitude: in these vineyards the original vines are planted without grafting. Almost exclusively Prié Blanc is produced in these vineyards, a particular vine that has been able to adapt to these climatic conditions; the vegetative cycle takes place in a short period, with a late bud break, to avoid the last frost and frost and reaches maturity earlier than the other vines, anticipating the arrival of the first snows. In 2008 the experimental laboratory at high altitude was inaugurated in agreement with the Courmayeur Alpine Guides. The experimental phase is aimed at verifying the influence of altitude in the second fermentation. Another particular product of the winery is the prized Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle Late Harvest “Chaudelune” Doc which involves the harvest during the night at a temperature between -6 and -10 °: water inside the berries freezes, thus ensuring a greater concentration of sugars.
