Alberelli di Giodo is the Sicilian project of Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most renowned winemakers, whose deep connection with Mount Etna developed over more than fifteen years of working on the volcano. Fascinated by Etna’s raw energy, extreme conditions and its noble native grape Nerello Mascalese, Ferrini decided to create a wine that could express the purest and most authentic voice of this extraordinary terroir.
The first vintage of Alberelli di Giodo was produced in 2016 from a single vineyard of just over one hectare, located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 950 meters above sea level. Here, ancient pre-phylloxera vines, aged between 80 and 100 years, are trained in the traditional low-bush alberello system, a viticultural heritage perfectly suited to the volcanic landscape.
The vineyard’s high elevation, northern exposure and dramatic temperature fluctuations create ideal conditions for slow and balanced ripening. The soils are black, sandy and rich in volcanic pumice, contributing intense minerality, freshness and finesse to the wine. These extreme conditions allow Nerello Mascalese to reach exceptional aromatic complexity while maintaining elegance and precision.
Vinification follows a philosophy of respect and minimal intervention, aimed at preserving the integrity of the fruit and the expressive power of the terroir. Alberelli di Giodo matures for 12 months in small 5-hectoliter French oak casks, a choice that enhances texture and depth without overshadowing the wine’s natural character.
The result is a wine of remarkable refinement, transparency and mineral tension, capable of conveying Etna’s volcanic soul with clarity and grace. Alberelli di Giodo stands as a tribute to Mount Etna, its ancient vines, and the timeless relationship between nature, tradition and human craftsmanship.
