The story of Schiopetto winery began in 1970, when Mario was given the opportunity by the church to rent the vineyards surrounding the Archbishop’s Palace at Capriva del Friuli. Mario completely renovated the vineyards, acquiring them as his property in 1989. He worked tirelessly to make his vineyards unique, leveraging the potential of the Ponca terroir – the clay and limestone soil of Friuli. Over time, his children, Maria Angela, Carlo, and Giorgio, joined him in managing the business, preserving their father’s tradition and passion. Mario pioneered the first “Tocai” and introduced modern white wine from Friuli.
Mario was also the visionary behind the introduction of new technologies and revolutionary innovations in farming practices and cellar operations. His spirit continues to drive the business, now in the hands of the Rotolo family since April 2014. They are committed to upholding Mario’s mission and philosophy, which includes initiatives such as planting and maintaining forests to balance CO2 emissions, using environmentally friendly products, and employing highly advanced boilers for central heating, fueled by wood and clippings from the vineyards.
