Fonzone was founded in 2005 in Paternopoli, in the heart of Irpinia, from the desire of Lorenzo Fonzone Caccese and his family to give voice to one of Southern Italy’s most expressive wine territories. Surrounded by hills, streams, and ancient villages, the estate was born from a deep respect for the land and a clear ambition: to produce wines that faithfully reflect the character and strength of Irpinia.
The vineyards are located within the Taurasi DOCG area, where Aglianico, Fiano and Falanghina coexist alongside olive trees, fruit orchards and woodland. This mosaic landscape creates a natural balance that is central to the identity of the estate. The vineyards extend on both sides of the hill, benefitting from multiple exposures and elevations ranging between 360 and 430 meters above sea level.
The soils are varied and complex, combining clay-limestone structures with looser sedimentary textures, enriched by volcanic dust deposited over centuries due to the proximity of Mount Vesuvius. The nearby Fredane and Ifalco streams further influence the local microclimate, enhancing freshness and aromatic definition in the wines.
Sustainability is the cornerstone of Fonzone’s philosophy. In the vineyard, only organic amendments and green manures are used, with no chemical fertilizers or herbicides. Low yields, respectful pruning and spontaneous grassing between rows encourage biodiversity and soil vitality, while integrated pest management ensures minimal environmental impact.
In the cellar, the same attention continues, with vinifications designed to preserve purity, structure and territorial expression. Under the guidance of renowned winemaker Luca D’Attoma, Fonzone produces wines of precision, depth and elegance, capable of expressing Irpinia’s unique identity with clarity and longevity.
