Raìna is a small, artisanal winery located in Montefalco, Umbria, founded in 2002 by Francesco Mariani, a chef and vine grower, together with his friend and assistant Andrea Mattioli. The name “Raìna” comes from the nickname of the former owner of the field where the estate’s first Sagrantino vines were planted, preserving a direct connection between the land and its history.
The estate covers approximately 10 hectares of vineyards situated between 220 and 300 meters above sea level. The soils are of medium consistency and rich in texture, and the vineyards benefit from predominantly southeastern exposures. Red varieties are trained using spurred cordon, while white grapes follow the Guyot system, with a planting density of about 5,700 vines per hectare.
The vineyards are planted with a diverse range of varieties that reflect both local tradition and thoughtful experimentation. Sagrantino stands at the core of the estate, supported by Sangiovese, Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino, Montepulciano, Merlot, and small plantings of Syrah. Each variety is cultivated with the aim of expressing balance, energy, and a strong sense of place.
Raìna’s philosophy is deeply rooted in environmental sustainability. The winery actively works to enhance, rather than exploit, its natural surroundings. Solar panels provide approximately 70% of the estate’s electricity, while the remaining energy comes entirely from renewable sources. Hot water is generated by solar energy, heating is supplied by a biomass boiler, and water is sourced from the estate’s own well and lake. Wastewater from the cellar is treated through a modern purification system.
Since 2012, Raìna has practiced biodynamic agriculture and is certified organic. In the vineyards, no chemical herbicides, fertilizers, or synthetic pesticides are used. Treatments rely solely on copper, sulfur, and natural plant-based infusions. In the cellar, fermentations occur spontaneously without the use of selected yeasts or additives, and only minimal sulfur is employed. The resulting wines are authentic, vibrant expressions of Montefalco, shaped by respect for nature and thoughtful craftsmanship.
