Guado al Melo is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC area, on the Tuscan hills overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Immersed in an unspoiled natural landscape characterized by Mediterranean scrubland, the estate is guided by Annalisa and Michele Scienza, who share a clear vision focused on producing authentic terroir-driven wines through an artisanal and sustainable approach.
The philosophy of Guado al Melo is deeply rooted in the idea that wine is the result of a complex synergy between vineyard, environment, and human knowledge. Sustainability is not treated as a trend, but as a natural consequence of respecting the land and its biodiversity. The vineyards are cultivated with great attention to balance, soil health, and the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem.
Located within the Bolgheri DOC zone, Guado al Melo produces both Bolgheri Rosso and Bolgheri Superiore wines, primarily based on Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside a fresh and expressive Vermentino that reflects the maritime influence of the nearby coast. The vineyards lie on deep alluvial soils, rich in sand, clay, and pebbles, which allow excellent drainage and contribute to elegance, structure, and aromatic precision in the wines.
A defining feature of the estate is its extraordinary biodiversity of grape varieties. Guado al Melo’s vineyards were conceived as a living archive of the territory, retracing the historical evolution of viticulture in Bolgheri. Alongside traditional varieties such as Vermentino and Sangiovese, the estate cultivates grapes that represent the modern identity of the appellation, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, and Rebo.
The winery also embraces one of the most ancient Mediterranean traditions: the field blend. In vineyards such as Campo Bianco, planted with five white varieties, and Campo Giardino, home to nearly thirty red varieties of Tuscan and Mediterranean origin, multiple grapes grow together in a single vineyard. This practice reflects the historic concept of wine as the pure expression of a place, where complexity emerges naturally from diversity.
At the heart of Guado al Melo lies an underground winery built according to ecological principles. Here, a unique Wine Library houses thousands of volumes dedicated to wine culture, viticulture, and history. Created with the invaluable contribution of Professor Attilio Scienza, Michele’s father and one of Italy’s most respected wine scholars, the library is part of a broader museum itinerary that extends through the vineyard and cellar, telling the story of the territory through historical vineyards, ancient tools, documents, and multimedia installations.
Guado al Melo today stands as a cultural and agricultural project as much as a winery, where wine becomes a bridge between past and present, tradition and innovation, landscape and knowledge—capturing the true spirit of Bolgheri in every bottle.
