Cantina della Volta is the contemporary expression of more than a century of winemaking heritage belonging to the Bellei family, winegrowers and entrepreneurs rooted in the town of Bomporto, in the province of Modena, since 1920. Today, the winery is guided by Christian Bellei, oenologist and representative of the fourth generation, who carries forward the family legacy with a clear focus on elegance, precision, and identity.
The estate is housed in the original building of the historic Cantina Bellei, constructed by Christian’s great-grandfather along the banks of the Naviglio di Bomporto canal. Nearby stood an eighteenth-century river dock where boats would perform “la volta”, the maneuver used to turn around before sailing back toward the city of Modena. This evocative location, steeped in memory and meaning, inspired both the winery’s name and its emblem of the riverboat.
Although firmly rooted in the heart of the Lambrusco di Sorbara appellation, Christian and his father Giuseppe have long shared a deep passion for high-quality sparkling wines. Their pursuit of excellence led them on numerous study trips to Épernay, the capital of Champagne, where they explored in depth the principles and techniques of the Metodo Classico.
Inspired by these experiences, the Bellei family began applying the same rigorous approach to their own vineyards and cellar in Bomporto, believing that Lambrusco di Sorbara possessed the natural acidity, delicacy, and finesse required for long lees aging. This vision culminated in 2010 with the founding of Cantina della Volta, a project entirely dedicated to elevating Sorbara through Metodo Classico vinification.
Already in the 1990s, Chardonnay and Pinot Nero vines sourced directly from France were planted, initially for experimental purposes. Through patience, technical refinement, and a profound understanding of sparkling wine production, Giuseppe Bellei achieved remarkable results, earning important recognition in national and international competitions.
Today, Cantina della Volta stands as a benchmark producer of Lambrusco di Sorbara Metodo Classico, crafting wines that unite tradition and innovation, expressive purity and structural precision, while remaining deeply faithful to their territory of origin.
