The story of Schiopetto winery began in 1970, when Mario Schiopetto was given the opportunity by the Church to rent the vineyards surrounding the Archbishop’s Palace in Capriva del Friuli. From the very beginning, Mario recognized the extraordinary potential of this land and dedicated himself to restoring and redefining its identity.
He completely renovated the vineyards and, in 1989, acquired them as his own property. Driven by an uncompromising pursuit of quality, Mario worked tirelessly to make his vineyards unique, drawing strength from the Ponca terroir—the distinctive clay and limestone soils of Friuli—which would become a defining element of the winery’s character.
A visionary winemaker, Mario Schiopetto was a true pioneer of modern white wine in Friuli. He introduced innovative approaches in both the vineyard and the cellar, and was among the first to elevate Friulano—then known as Tocai—into a wine of international prestige, setting new standards for the region.
Over time, his children Maria Angela, Carlo, and Giorgio joined him in managing the estate, preserving their father’s philosophy, passion, and dedication to excellence. Innovation and respect for tradition continued to go hand in hand, shaping the evolution of the winery.
Mario’s pioneering spirit also extended to sustainability and technological advancement. He introduced revolutionary farming practices and modern cellar techniques, always guided by a forward-looking vision. Since April 2014, the estate has been owned by the Rotolo family, who remain deeply committed to honoring Mario’s mission and values.
Today, Schiopetto continues to follow a philosophy rooted in environmental responsibility, including the planting and preservation of forests to offset CO₂ emissions, the use of environmentally friendly products, and highly efficient central heating systems powered by wood and vineyard clippings. These choices reflect a long-term commitment to balance, sustainability, and respect for the land.
