Poggio Salvi
The Azienda Agricola Poggio Salvi is ideally located, about miles southeast
of Siena, in the one of the most luxuriant and fascinating zone in Tuscany,
surrounded by the rivers Merse and Ombrone and the hills of Montagnola Senese.
This estate was founded a century ago by the Bicchi family and handed down
from generation to generation until 1980, when Laura Bicchi and her mother
Grazia Mari inherited the property and its estate. Mr. Roberto Bonucci,
Laura’s husband, handles the agricultural and commercial part of the
business; the technical end of it is under the watchful eye of oenologist
Leonardo Bellacini. The vineyard spans over 15 acres of which 12 are planted
to Chianti Colli Senesi D.O.C.G. The red grapes grown here are 60% Sangiovese
Grosso (Brunello) 20% Sangiovese, 10% mix of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
and 10% of Colorino, Canaiolo, and Malvasia Nera. The white grapes are represented
by 50% Sauvignon, 10% Chardonnay, and the remaining is Trebbiano and Malvasia.
There are many young vines not yet in full production. The soil composition
is the clay-limestone typical of the Siena zone. The highest elevation of
this vineyard is approximately at 924 feet above sea level and enjoys a
climate of cold winters, humid springs and very dry, hot summers which are
favorable to the maturation of the grapes, which happened to be harvested
earlier than the Chianti. The harvest of the white grapes is usually around
the first week in September while the red grapes are harvested around the
first and second week of October. The cordon runner system is used to train
the young red grapevines; the Guyot system is used for all the old vines
and the white grapevines. This vineyard produces approximately 2,500 cases
of Chianti Colli Senesi per year. |
