La Calonica
The Azienda Agricola La Calonica is located 5 miles from Montepulciano,
in the verdant region of Tuscany. The estate was founded in 1970 by the
Cattani family and is currently managed by their heir, Fernando Cattani.
The estate spans about 20 acres of which 11 acres are planted with grapevines,
2 with olive groves and 4 with forest. Of those 11 acres 80% are planted
to Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, and 10% Merlot (not yet in production).
The soil composition is clay-limestone. At an altitude of 1100 feet above
sea
level, this microclimate of humid winter and very dry summer supports
the best environment for high quality wine production. These vines are cultivated
with the Guyot system for a density of 1050 vines per acre and an average
yield of 6.5 tons of grapes. The annual production of wines is 11,250
cases. |
