Funtanin
The Azienda Agricola Funtanin is located in the heartland of the Roero
hills, in the commune of Canale and considered a great producer of fine
wines. This fairly young estate is run by two brothers: Pier Carlo and Bruno
Sperone (interior oenologist) and with the cooperation of the external oenologist
Enzo Quinterno. Together, they are bringing this winery to prosper with
a rich vitality and enthusiasm—after so many generations of hard work
in these fields, they have found their true passion: “il vino”.
The vineyards are planted to 11 hectares of vines (predominately Arneis)
and enjoy a southwestern exposure. The typology attributed to these wines
is due to the sandy siliceous clay soil, well suited for Arneis planting.
The Arneis vine had been noticed in the hills as early as the 15th century
as Renesium, but not long ago it had practically disappeared. Originally,
Arneis, whose name means “rascal” in dialect because of its
unpredictable behavior, was so lightly regarded that it was planted amidst
Nebbiolo because it ripens first and its sweet grapes draws bees away from
the more prized dark bunches. The yearly production of Arneis is circa 5,000
cases. |
